4Mouthwatering collection
By S. J. C. Stevens
Any Beatles fan will like this book: it contains superb photographs of memorabilia that were collected by John Lennon's son Julian or given to him by his father, such as gold records (all USA discs), song lyrics, guitars, objects, postcards, clothes etc. Also there are many previously unseen photographs, mainly of Julian as a boy together with John or Paul. Personally I would have loved to see more text by Julian himself. Most text now is by Brian Southall and basically tells "the same old fab4 story", but this is possibly because the book is aimed at a broader public rather than hard-core Beatles fans only. Still it is great to read some personal stories by Julian, like his relationship with Paul McCartney or his experience of drumming on a song on Lennon's Walls and Bridges LP.I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Beatles or in 60's music. It is a great quality hardback book with excellent value for money. Finally, the book's sales support the White Feather Foundation.

4Worth it just for the photos
By G. Griffith
If, like me, you're a long-time Beatles memorabilia collector, the interest in this book will have little to do with the information and facts provided, which are minimal. But the opportunity to see nice quality photographs of the items in Julian's personal collection is a lot of fun. Some of the items are not all that particularly rare or valuable, but clearly have a high personal, emotional value to Julian. And that's nice to see, as well. Others, of course, are wonderful historical artifacts of great value. But of course, the value is not the issue here. This book isn't about values. It's really about Julian opening up to his father's fans and letting us see his very personal, very cherished collection. Julian was left with so very little in the way of memories of his father -- he saw John but a handful of times after the divorce (and I suspect not much more often even before the divorce). It's no wonder he takes such personal pride in the few items he's saved from his past - and the many more items he's been able to purchase over the years. He deserves to own this collection.Brian Southall is the author (and co-author) of some excellent books - his "Only a Northern Song" is a must-read for Beatles fanatics. Here, he's given very little space to give us much textual content. But that's okay - because the photos are huge and crisp. And for collectors like me, that's the value of this book.A really nice idea would have been to have included a companion CD with the book containing Julian's own audio anecdotes about each of the items shown in the book. Now that would have been like getting a personally guided tour with Julian himself. While that would have been ideal, the book is worth it for the photos alone.

3Dear Sir or Madam will you read my book....
By Quiverbow
Ringo published a book of postcards he received through the years from the other Beatles and, until now, that personal side of the Fab Four has been sadly ignored. Julian Lennon has decided to get himself into print by bringing out a book that focuses on his own collection of memorabilia. A good idea and one you would think would be chock full of pages that have you salivating. Unfortunately, the 'wow' factor is a bit thin on the ground here.Supposedly Lennon Jr's collection of both Beatle and solo ephemera, it's heavy on USA gold discs (and he claims to have the only complete collection of these) with a smattering of a few more interesting items - not that the gold discs aren't noteworthy, but we've all seen photos of these. While there are posters, tickets and a white label `I Want To Hold Your Hand' single, which are all things we can have in our collections, it's the items that you and I can never own that generate the most excitement. It's the selection of guitars, a Grammy Award, an acetate of `All you Need is Love', handwritten song lyrics, clothing and the obvious photos, most of which I've never seen, that stand out in what is, in all honesty, a bit of a shoulder shrugging assortment. The most interesting for me was the silver Apple emblem Lennon had on the front of his car and the famous painting of Lucy, in the Sky with Diamonds.I would have expected him to have the aforementioned gold discs and a plethora of autographed records, etc but I would have thought he would have much, much more. Maybe he has, which begs the question as to why it isn't here? An advance copy of the `She Loves You' 45 - that's one distinguished by having a red `A' sticker - is by no means special, nor is a factory sample `Long Tall Sally' EP. The accompanying text tends to be a re-working of The Beatles' story with not much input from Lennon himself, which is rather disappointing. As I doubt the casual buyer would bother with this and committed Beatles fans will have read the words inside many times before, I'm not sure of the target audience at which this book is aimed. Maybe the hard-core collector like myself - I did buy it after all, but I wish I hadn't. The definitive tome on this subject is awaited.
