3Locally readable, globally formless.

There are some good bits in this novel and it is written in a very readable style, but there is not a lot to it. It feels like more of a warm up for the much better accomplished, and more substantial, May We Be Forgiven. We have familiar Homes themes of people who have lost control of their lives and parents who have not lived up to their responsibilities, but worked out less satisfactorily than in her other novels and stories. The novel follows the aimless behaviour of Richard Novak, a very wealthy middle aged man who has spent an indeterminate amount of time holed up in his fancy Los Angeles house doing nothing except walking on his treadmill, watching one of his neighbours swimmming, checking how his investments are performing and eating faddy food prepared by a nutritionist. It's all very much a metaphor for him not engaging with his life which he decides to do again after having a health scare. So he goes and eats some donuts, chats with his neighbours who turn out to be famous, gets into a number of unexpected melodramatic scrapes and has a go at being nice to people. All the while buoyed up by his enormous amounts of money. But while it's written in a very readable way and has lots of nice touches of humour, wit and observation, it doesn't really hang together very well. It's all very "nice" and and perhaps its the lack of the nasty edge which you get in Homes' other books that makes it less coherent. There doesn't seem to be much driving it and by the end I had a sort of "so what?" feeling about it.

5It might not save your life but it is important
By Kindle Customer
I remember reading Catcher in the Rye at school, I remember reading it and it changing my life. It was ok to be a loner, an outsider. I want the only one who hated everything. This book is like that but twenty years down the line. Money isn't everything, neither is your job. It's like the opposite of Fight Club , you don't want to blow s*** up and overthrow the world. You want to make a positive change to the world you want to be the you you didn't know you wanted to be.
