I have read other books by Anthony Horowitz and found them quite enjoyable, dont be put off that he writes childrens books too as this is a very different kettle of fish.I am a big fan of the original Sherlock Holmes books and was more than a little unsure if another author could capture the feeling of the era and pace of Arthur Conan Doyles creation. I was not disappointed, it was as if a lost book of Conan Doyles had been discovered and put into print. A thoroughly good read, dont just take my word for it as it has been officially been endorsed by the Conan Doyle family (the only author to have done so). He could have just written it without endorsement but it was they who contacted him to write a new book for Holmes, and there is also the follow up Moriarty to savour.........Now where is my companion.....“Come Watson, come! The game is afoot! Not a word! Into your clothes and come!”

This is Anthony Horowitz's turn to try his hand at picking up the Conan Doyle baton, and in my opinion the result is superb. House of Silk is a splendid Sherlock Holmes novel, true to the spirit of Conan Doyle (oh how I hate the BBC's 21st century Holmes nonsense), and its a book that I couldn't put down. As a fan of the original stories I was sceptical that anyone could better Conan Doyle but for only £0.99 in Kindle format House of Silk was worth a gamble and what did I have to loose but my scepticism? And loose it I did, this is an excellent telling by a very Conan Doyleish Dr Watson of a 21st century story set in Holmes's London of the 1890s and if anyone can beat Horowitz at the Holmes game then I want to see it. But until then I'm looking forward to reading Horowitz's sequel Moriarty.

4Interesting attempt...
By Kat Man Do
With the renewed interest in all things Sherlock Holmes through the BBC series and Guy Ritchie's films there are now several people adding to the canonical works of Sir Arthur, all of whom are attempting to recreate the voice of Watson.Horowitz makes a decent fist of recreating the atmosphere of the original tales. However, I agree with several of the reviews that where Horowitz has failed (or missed the mark, as failed seems a bit harsh) is with regard to the overly sensitive social conscience that is more Boz than AC-D, which runs throughout this tale. Also missing are the mercurial and taciturn aspects to Holmes' character as well as the almost bi-polar nature of his mood swings.Lest we forget, AC-D only wrote four novels involving Holmes, the rest of the canon were short stories of varying length written for magazine publication, so to attempt to write and to succeed with an authentic full length story is ambitious and by and large Horowitz does a reasonable job albeit for the criticisms above. The story and plot are well constructed, move at a cracking pace with the solution nicely revealing itself in typical Holmes/Watson style.I'd recommend this book.
