Exeptional

While I have read many books with the IRA as the protagonists, this one stands out because it shows us how the troubles were viewed from an American stand point, extremely well written, the author a former New York Police Officer helps add realism to the characters and situations within, the book deals with a conflict of interests and beliefs, and is written in such away you have to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next, Keegan finds himself in too deep and left with some not so nice decisions, decisions that could get him dead or in jail, he must face up to what is most important his life with NYPD and his family, or a cause across the ocean. Well worth the money, a great read.

An Intriguing Look at the Inner Workings of the NYPD

Anything I ever knew, or thought I knew, about the inner workings of the New York City Police Department pales to insignificance before I read this novel. Norris is the real deal, and he takes you on a journey that combines his professional knowledge with a terrific storytelling ability - of Lieutenant James Keegan, the Department's rising star, and his involvement with the IRA. He delves into the mind of the fanatic and cold-blooded murderer, and deals with the conundrum of being caught between two loyalties, and ultimately, the question of which has the higher calling: the love of family, or duty and honour. Norris didn't flinch from any of these compelling questions.Last but by no means least, this book is a salute to the brave men and women of the police department, who put their lives on the line, day in and day out, to make the streets of New York safe for her citizens, and, I daresay, other police departments in other cities all over the world.Bravo, Mr. Norris, you've done them proud!

HERO OR VILLAIN?

An exciting, extremely well-written story (set in 1995) centred around Lieutenant James Keegan of the NYPD Joint Terrorist Task Force who, as well as being a police officer dedicated to his job, has long been an IRA gun-runner. The story follows the twists and turns of plot and moral choice resulting from the IRA's decision to send a cold-bloodied killer to the US to carry out a brutal, high-profile assassination. Keegan is presented with a stark chice: he has to remain faithful either to his officer's duty to the people he serves or to the Irish Republican cause. George Norris, expertly drawing upon his own long experience in the NYPD, ratchets up the tension and excitement as we are left guessing throughout as to the outcome. Brilliantly done. You must check this book out.

From writer of "twaddle" to aspirational model

Katherine Mansfield, born in Wellington, NZ in 1888, was strangely unfitted for her time, with an independent spirit that led her to deny many accepted conventions. Writing was her whole life's focus.Published from the age of nine, she commented:"I imagine I was always writing. Twaddle it was, too. But better far write twaddle or anything, anything, than nothing at all."Her short stories, collected here, reflect wonderfully her keen eye for the pretension and absurdity in much of human behaviour - and the strict limitations set on a woman of her class and era. Men departed every morning to carry out mysterious functions at the office while women stayed at home, organising the servants and being decorative.She dissects family life, marriage and loneliness - both inside and outside relationships. What strikes me most is her piercing humour; but also her equally piercing, sometimes almost unbearable insight into women's exasperating, inescapable compulsion towards a man rather than to independence. Katherine Mansfield strove to free herself from human entanglements and betrayals which were a distraction from her writing; and as her biographer Claire Tomalin shows, caused her life-long health as well as emotional problems.Her stories often catch the reader between helpless laughter and a sinister lurking horror in the background:"When I was with Lady Tukes," said Nurse Andrews, "she had such a dainty little contrayvance for the buttah. It was a silvah Cupid balanced on the - on the bordah of a glass dish, holding a tayny fork"."she wore a black velvet toque, with an incredibly surprised looking seagull camped on the very top of it"."They like me at first; they think me uncommon, or original; but then immediately I want to show them - even give them a hint - that I like them, they seem to get frightened and begin to disappear"."If I had seen him in the street I would have said I could not possibly love a man who wore a cap like that....the way it makes his ears stick out, and way it makes him have no back to his head at all".

Nearly universal first textbook on DSP

This book has been the most used textbook for a first course on Signal Processing. The lucid explanations and physical insights presented are essential to the successful understanding of DSP. The material is however clearly intended for a first course on the subject and furthermore does not give as much practical ('hands on', Matlab demonstration) kind of exercises/examples for the student to try out himself. This approach is followed widely in other modern texts on DSP(eg by Sanjit Mitra etc) However this book is a sheer classic for its clarity and elegant explanations, and no other book is nearly as easy to read as this in the opinion of this reviewer.For another good introductory textbook on DSP Please see the text by Proakis et al.

An excellent book for studying discrete time signals.

The material in this book is so well organized that it provides flexibility to be used in both undergraduate and graduate level. Some additions to the previous edition of the book, like expanded coverage on multi-rate signal processing and discussion of the cosine transform, made the book a great up-to-date resource for the people studying signal processing.I'm sure that every one in engineering, dealt with signal processing, already knows Oppenheim's reputation. That leaves nothing to be told about the book.

Bible on DSP

This is the book we used on EE undergraduate study 4 years a go. It is always the main source for DSP topic. The book goes into deep mathematical theory and teaches the material in a structured way. Not good for those people who want to implement a DFT in a programming language, but it is good for those who wonder why we compute DFT.

Great sprinkling of paranormal!!! gimme gimme next one.

A contemporary NA romance with a difference....a paranormal edge has been added, now it isn't full on angels or gods or goddesses flying around fighting , it is just a 'normal' Immortal muse going about her daily business of inspiring the creative and trying not to let things get all crazy and out of control. If you can call that normal!I love the added extra we get from fantasy like this, it really does kick things up a notch, i find it lets the imagination fly, let loose and completely accept what the author is writing , real escapism.Kalli and Wilder had a very intense relationship it was edgy and a whirlwind, it takes them both over, they get under each others skin and the relationship is fully charged and HOT.I had a very easy time visualising the whole thing, which is always what I want in a book, Cora sprinkles in more and more elements of the supernatural world she is creating as the story unfolds until you get to a certain point where it is all so 'oh my goodness' and then.What an ending. I am beside myself for the next book.

Not a billionaire in sight (THANK GOD)

Having read Cora's Losing It trilogy, I knew I really liked her writing style and so when I saw Inspire amongst her books, I knew I had to try it out. As a fan of urban, contemporary fantasy, I love a brand new take on traditional story elements and that's what you get with Inspire. While people might be scared somewhat by the fantasy element of the book, at the heart of the book is Kalli and Wilder's relationship. Of course I won't give anything away but you go through a rollercoaster of emotions when reading this and I can't wait to read the next in the series, what a cliffhanger! If you find the world of New Adult books a bit monotonous (there are only so many billionaire stories you can read before it gets old) then you should really check Inspire out.

A must read for anyone who loves romance and Greek myth/supernatural. Really fun to read. Cora Carmack books are always amazing no matter the subject and if you haven't read any of her books yet you better do because You are missing out!!!

get knowledge regarding various Open Source Licenses

Recently I was faced a problem to determine which code can be used within the software when different licenses are mixed. Which was not a pleasant task. Studying legal related topics usually doesn't count into `ten most interesting' things software engineers like to do.However, sometimes you have to face the problem. Van Lindberg deconstructs the legal related issue in very structured way. First of all he defines all the legal related terms and provides examples for each case. After the background is settled he goes into details - how to deal with particular, license related issues when you start to develop something. What I have found most interesting was explanation of GPL license - which is widely used and very often miss understood. Another issue that is raised within the book, and worth thinking about, is your employment - does it inflict your thinking outside company? Are you aware of that it can?What I can see at a first glance are the differences between USA law and European one. This makes it difficult to suggest this book as source of legal knowledge for anyone who lives outside USA. On the other hand, Van describes most common licenses that are available on the global `market' - which can help you some way. What I have missed, however was detailed description of BSD license. I think that BSD can be treated as competitor for GPL - some way, and it would be nice to see its detailed explanation - unless it is so simple that it doesn't require it. Would I recommend this book? It depends. If you live in USA I think it is good source of knowledge served in very clear way. If you live outside USA - I think you will only benefit from few chapters like GPL, Reverse Engineering, Choosing a license ones. If you need explanation of basing legal terms - I think you can go for it - regardless of your living place.
