Learn from the Master

I've flown gliders since I was 17, though without accumulating more than a couple of hundred hours (work, marriage etc). I've bought a few gliding books over the last couple of years ("Beyond Gliding Distance" being one of the best) and they are essentially textbooks on the mechanics of flying and meteorology.This is a different kind of book: Sebastian Kawa, in a book firstly about his early life and then, at greater length, his flying, lets the reader inside his head by showing the way he thinks.In some ways, this makes for a less straightforward book to read, as it requires greater engagement from the reader, but it is very rewarding.A book which will become a masterpiece, though not for the absolute beginner.

Enjoy and Lean

This book is basically in two parts. The first is about Sebastions life, his involvement in 10 years of sailing and then in gliding whist at the same time stuying to be a Doctor. His gliding experience makes very interesting reading - written in a question and answer format.The second is all about the technique of flying and understanding the weather and how to use it. Gliding is a sport where you never stop learning and with about 4000 hours in my log book, I enjoyed learning more from this section of the book. A better way would to be with Sebastion in a two seater to watch and learn how he does it and has become probably the best glider pilot in the world. I have a Duo, Sebastion in the UK, its an invitation.The book is expensive but worth every penny.
