The Audacity

Initially I was not too keen on variations and much preferred the P&P continuations for obvious reasons, but they are few and far. I have recently come to enjoy the well written ones and don't mind how many twist and turns there are. However, if someone feels the need to write a variation, I find it most audacious to change the ending for any of the main characters. It is not your book nor are they your characters so you may dabble but not alter. The author is not paying homage to JA when they do that and should just write their own book with their own characters. It's simple...Darcy marry's Elizabeth, Bingley marry's Jane! I don't mind the tampering with the others, even though JA wrote Kitty marry's a clergy and Mary a clerk, but sometimes they just go too far. Ok rant over. The first two stories aren't bad, the third raised my hackles.

This book was recommended to me through a book group which actually specialises in paranormal romance. Whilst not at all paranormal there is plenty of romance here. This is a collection of three short stories, all written as variations of Pride and Prejudice. Although they are written by the same person each story is very different to the other two, and equally different to the great original. Well worth the read.

On the whole I liked the writing and could go along with the author's view of how things might have turned out for Elizabeth and Darcy - but I did feel the endings were too drawn out. Did we really need to know exactly who married who and the names of the children they each had?
