This is an excellent course in Sanskrit, but you need to know French in order to use it. The Assimil method is to give short lessons which can be completed in a day. Most lessons consist of a dialogue on one page, with the translation (in French) on the facing page. Below these will be a number of footnotes explaining points of grammar, etc. This is then followed by a set of exercises. The audio for each lesson has the dialogue followed by the exercises. Every 7th lesson is a set of grammatical notes explaining points touched on in the previous 6 lessons. The idea is that your knowledge build progressively and by focusing on texts and audio (rather than lengthy grammatical explanations) you assimilate the main vocabulary and grammar. The method is not perfect, but the emphasis on text + audio make these courses more effective than ordinary textbooks. I would recommend moving a bit slower, however, and taking 2-3 days per lesson and working in plenty of review days, rather than pushing to complete it in one lesson per day.The other thing that sets this course apart from any other Sanskrit textbook is the fact that it has 4 CDs of audio, and the audio is 100% in Sanskrit. The mp3 CD is convenient to load onto your phone or music player, and if you can enable embedded lyrics it will show the script (in Devanagari) while the audio is playing, which is perfect for reviewing lessons while out and about. Unlike some other courses I have seen, the audio is read by native speakers of Sanskrit.
